Meet the Team
To honor our longstanding friends and collaborators in Ghana, our lab logo incorporates the Adinkra symbol Nyansapo, the wisdom knot, which represents intelligence, ingenuity, and patience. Does that sound like you?
We welcome students and collaborators at all career stages, particularly if you are a strong writer and have experience with geospatial technology, surveys, quantitative or qualitative methods, or data science. Many students complete thesis, capstone, or fellowship requirements through their work with the lab. Contact Dr. Stoler to learn more.
Justin Stoler, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Professor, Geography & Sustainable Development, and Public Health Sciences
I am a former management consultant from New York (and before that, a business and psychology double-major) who went back to school to study GIS and global health. I now research and teach health disparities using social, environmental, and spatial epidemiological methods. I have more than a decade of experience studying drinking water and infectious diseases in Ghana, and I co-lead the HWISE-RCN, an interdisciplinary community of water insecurity researchers. Social and environmental justice are front-and-center throughout my research and teaching.
Like everyone else, I like cooking, gardening, and adventure travel. My two dogs are smarter than your honors student, and I like my music loud.
Theo Krijnse Locker
B.S. Ecosystem Science and Policy, UM '25
I am interested in anything related to environmental sustainability, particularly water use. I support two projects: one about undiagnosed diseases, and another about public perceptions of water safety in the US. When I'm not working, I am outside climbing, hiking, paddling, or whatever and exploring new places.
Megan Locke
B.B.A. Finance, UM '25
I am interested in exploring the intersection of finance and global health. For the lab, I support a project about university students' trust in science and propensity for conspiracy thinking and misinformation. In my free time, I enjoy the beach, cooking, shopping, and rooting for my Philly teams.
Previous Team Members
Our students have continued on to all sorts of careers and graduate degrees. Many of them co-authored peer-reviewed research as a student, which is a testament to their education and passion for science. Will you be next?
